APPROVED PLUMBER
CENTRAL HEATING BOILERS

If we undertake the installation of a central heating boiler we expect the
customer to understand the following information and will require a copy
of this page to be signed which will be considered to be acceptance of
the contents and agreement with any conditions contained herein.
EMERGENCIES
If a gas leak or fault occurs or is suspected the electrical supply to the
boiler should be turned off and the gas supply turned off at the meter.
You should then consult your local gas company, a competent heating
engineer or the installation/servicing
company.
GENERAL
A boiler must be installed and serviced by a competent person in
accordance with the Gas
Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. Gas Safe registered
engineers (who were formally known as 'CORGI' registered installers)
undertake this work to a safe and satisfactory standard. The boiler is
tested and certificated for safety and performance so it is essential no
alterations are made.
This information will enable you to obtain the best performance from your
boiler and ensure you comply with the terms of your warranty. If you have
a guarantee that requires registration, make sure the registration card is completed and returned within 30 days of the
boiler being installed, or within other such time as required.
The Benchmark logbook should be completed by the installer and/or commissioning engineer and given to the user.
For continual efficient and safe operation the boiler, it is recommended that it is checked and serviced at regular intervals.
The frequency of servicing will depend upon the make, installation conditions and usage, but generally an annual service
should be adequate.
If the boiler is installed in a rented property there is a duty of care imposed on the owner of the property by the current
issue of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, Section 35. Servicing and/or maintenance should be carried out
by a competent person in accordance with the rules currently in force.
INSTALLATION
A space must be left around the boiler and enough clearance in front to allow for servicing. The boiler casing should not be removed or adjusted as incorrect fitting may result in incorrect operation or even a failure to operate.
Insulation can cause irritation to the skin, eyes and the respiratory tract so a history of skin complaints may mean a susceptibility to irritation. High dust levels only normally occur if the material is broken. Handling should not cause
discomfort, but normal good hygiene such as washing hands before eating, drinking or using the lavatory is advisable
and any irritation to the eyes or severe irritation to the skin should be brought to the attention of a medical practitioner.
No sealed component should be tampered with as this could result in a potentially dangerous situation.
Some boilers can be fitted into a compartment or cupboards and may not require ventilation openings. In such
circumstances the compartment or cupboard should not be used for any other purpose.
CARE & MAINTENANCE
If a repair is necessary, only original spare parts should be used.
If an immersion heater in the cylinder is fitted, it should be switched off.
The boiler will not function if the condensate drain becomes blocked, so no alteration or modification or blockage should be permitted. Frost or freezing conditions may cause ice to form in the condense drain if installed externally and should be
removed by the use of warm cloths wrapped around the pipe. The boiler should then restart when any ice has melted, but
if it fails the fault should be reported to your installation/servicing company.
Boilers have metal parts and care should be taken when handling and cleaning with particular attention being paid to
corners and edges. The boiler casing can be cleaned using a mild liquid detergent on a damp cloth, followed by a dry cloth
polish. Do not use any form of abrasive or solvent cleaner as you may damage the paintwork.
The boiler will not work without a suitable electrical supply, including an adequate earthing. If the electrical supply is
interrupted for any reason normal operation of the boiler should resume when the supply is restored, and any external
controls are reset.
If the boiler does not resume normal operation turn the mains reset switch off and on.
If the boiler still does not resume normal operation the overheat thermostat may have operated, which would be abnormal
so it would be advisable to consult your installation/servicing company.
If the mains electricity and gas are to be turned off for long periods for any reason it is recommended the whole system, including the boiler, should be drained to avoid the risk of freezing.
If you have a sealed water system draining, filling, refilling and pressurising should be carried out only by a competent
person and the boiler only lit after filling and pressurising.
The pressure should read at least 0.7 bar, when the system is cold. (This may vary so refer to manufacturer or user
instructions first.) If the pressure reading is below that required, follow the instructions left by your installer to refill the
system. Alternatively your installer or other competent person should be requested to refill the system.
